The Making of a Manager
A book by Julie Zhuo
I read this with someone on my team who's interested in becoming a manager. The goal was to get a better understanding of what the role of a manager entails. This brought a structured way to discuss together different topics that helped us understand what the expectations are for a good manager. It was also helpful for an IC to learn how to build good habits and start your trajectory in becoming a team leader.
To me, this was actually a re-read. I didn't realize how many of the recommendations and behaviors are already so ingrained in my way of managing my team. It was positively surprising to see that a lot of the good traits of a manager and how a team behaves were effectively how my team behaves and what my management style aligns with.
I have read several management books, and I think this is very digestible. It has plenty of suggestions of action items you can pick up right now, and I would definitely recommend it as a read for a good understanding of the obstacles that come in going from IC to manager. There are several areas that are not covered in enough depth, but I don't think that's the point of this book. There are others out there that can actually help you get a more refined insight on specific topics as necessary (eee.g. "Team Topologies" or "The Manager's Path").
Overall, very clear, rich of action items and, clearly, worth a re-read.
