Man's Search for Meaning

A book by Viktor E. Frankl

Since it's my favorite thing to do, I went in "blind" not really knowing what to expect. This was a recommendation I had in my "to read" list for a while. The circumstances that prompted this book confirm (once more) the idea that a belief or a thinking framework are put to a test when the settings are pushed to an extreme. Being in a concentration camp definitely qualifies.

This is a first draft over a month after I completed the book, I'm still digesting all the notes I took. I wanted to write down a first reaction.

While the message is incredibly powerful I found at times that Logotherapy was oversimplifying things. There are more than a handful of sections that require re-reading, not necessarily because they are valuable, but to hopefully get a better understanding. I struggled a bit with how easily some of the author's resolutions were about finding meaning in life. Maybe it's the format but I felt that he settled in formulating Logotherapy and then retrofitted that to all circumstances in life, thus self-materializing its validity.

Beyond this, I found myself often nodding in agreement. A few highlights:

  • Success and happiness are temporary states
  • The search for meaning is a continuous journey
  • Significant Work, Love, and Courage in difficult times can be sources of meaning
  • If you have a WHY not HOW can stop you

While you might not agree with some simplistic views, there are many important lessons that can empower you in your life's journey.
