Dungeon Crawler Carl
A book by Matt Dinniman
I feel compelled to praise Matt Dinniman for this new (to me) genre that was worth exploring. It was fun and entertaining, I laughed out a loud a few times and if you're new to LitRPG this is a good place to start.
I would rate it a bit above a 3, but not enough to justify a re-read. I was surprised at how quickly and easily Carl adapted and accepted this new reality, I'm afraid it was the right time for him to escape his own life. Donut was a witty addition and I didn't expect it to be as good as it turned out to be. The storyline, while it presents a potentially unbounded universe, didn't push me to re-explore parts that might hint at a bigger picture. I will likely pick up the next book to understand how much more there is about this creative world.
I feel conflicted about the RPG part. While I am a big fan of RPG-anything, it felt like anything is acceptable in the levels he goes through. It adds a layer of unpredictability, but it left me confused about the general rules that define this world. Some might like it, some might not be as easily persuaded.
Overall, it was fun and I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. It made it twice as entertaining!
